Kamran’s (@KamranWeb) grinding down some plexiglass to fit in the electronics for the RE/Lab’s new alternative and augmented communication (AAC) project. We started with the design Morse2Go developed and have been trying to make a more compact single unit that will allow someone to create text and spoken English/Spanish using just for buttons. Rather than morse code, we’re using H4 input method developed by Scott MacKenzie at York University. More to follow.

Accessibility Innovation Showcase
This summer, RE/Lab RAs (funded by Ryerson’s OVPRI) have been working on five projects to present at the ParaPanAm Games’ Accessibility Innovation Showcase. Hope to see you there.
innovation.ca talking about our lab director :)
Canadian Foundation for Innovation ran a story last week about work started in the EDGE Lab, and continuing in the RE/Lab: More than just a cardboard box: Using this cheap and lightweight material, researchers are helping parents design custom adaptations for their children with special needs. The foundation has funded both labs and has been a great supporter of our work.
Check out the great video they did as well.
The two designs in the images will be presented at the Para PanAm Games Accessibility Showcase.
Getting ready for the ParaPanAm Games
Komal is one of the lab’s summer RA students working on 5 projects to present at the ParaPanAm Games’ Accessible Innovation Showcase. She’s grinding down some aluminum struts to build a frame for Mapping Place, one of our tangible narrative surfaces. All of the RAs are learning to use various traditional fabrication tools (grinders, sanders, drill presses) as well as 3D printers and laser cutters.
Welcome to the RE/Lab
Coming Summer 2015!
Responsive Ecologies Lab is a new research centre @ryersonu brought to you by Ali Mazalek and @jasonnolan, et al. We are just starting up this summer and will be slowly building both the research infrastructure and this knowledge transmission space. Follow @relabrye for the most up to date info on the RE/Lab.
RE/Lab has grown out of the EDGE Lab and SynLab.
Infrastructure funding for RE/Lab is made possible by grants from Canadian Foundation for Innovation (@innovationca), the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation (@OntInnovation), the Faculty of Community Services at Ryerson, and Ryerson University. Providers of in-kind support include: Apple, Christie Digital, Multitaction, Cimetrix, Reactable Systems.
